LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week

LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week is a week dedicated to breaking down some of the perceived barriers to adoption and fostering. The week is organised by New Family Social – the UK network for LGBT adoptive and foster families.

Across the UK there is a desperate need for more adopters and foster careers to come forward and open up their homes to some of the country’s most vulnerable children and young people. Slough is no different. At Slough Children’s Services Trust we need more people to provide a loving, nurturing home to our children and young people in Slough, somewhere where they can be safe, secure and successful.

One of the issues we face, however, is that many people have preconceived ideas of what makes the typical adopter and foster carer and who can or cannot become one.

Being LGBT+ is certainly no barrier. In fact, in 2018, 1 in 8 adoptions in England were to same-sex couples. Of course, just to break down another barrier, you don’t even need to be part of a couple – single adopters and foster carers are welcome too.

To become a foster carer, all you need is the ability to look after a child, so if you’ve got a room in your home and room in your heart then we’d love to hear from you.

If you feel inspired and you are interested in becoming a foster carer then please email foster@sloughchildrenfirst.co.uk, phone 01753 690777 or text FOSTER to 60066. One of our advisors would be happy to talk to you about fostering in more detail and perhaps start you on an exciting new journey.
